Often, even what would be very evident to those who ignored any notion of the subject, can go unnoticed within the usual schemes.
Archibald Cochrane, a 19th-century Scottish physician, reflected on the fact that healthcare professionals did not make practical use of the data of experimental evidence, which was always evolving, tending to prefer actions consolidated by custom but not always of proven scientific value.
Not much has changed today, which is why we talk about Evidence-Based Medicine, a medicine based on proof of efficacy: it may seem obvious that medicine is already based on scientific evidence of efficacy, and yet we are always surprised at how far we are from an ideal condition.
Moreover, today, in addition to a low quality of evidence and the inertia of clinical habits, we are faced with the pressure of industrialization and the financialization of the sector which often puts profit before efficacy, making the situation even more complex and delicate.
For this reason, some groups of independent researchers such as the Cochrane Collaboration (in memory of the Scottish doctor), are mapping the available knowledge, conducting "systematic reviews" of all studies conducted on the efficacy and safety of health interventions, with the aim of filling the gaps in medical knowledge, restructuring certain unfounded beliefs and helping people make informed decisions about their health.
THE ACTION OF 5LB MAGAZINE
Similarly to the ongoing process of scientific review, in this scenario, the action of 5LB Magazine is inserted, which operates on 3 progressive levels:
1- Review of media communication and daily news which, due to the commercial modality with which they are generally disseminated, too often return a distorted image of medical science. This gross plan is already a chasm that prevents contact between popular beliefs and scientific evidence.
2- Collection of the best available evidence from sources that are as reliable and verifiable as possible (Cochrane is certainly one of these). This plan guarantees a solid foundation on which to build.
3- All the information thus acquired will be observed and reviewed from a different point of view, through the "glasses" of the 5 Biological Laws, an etiological model that offers a new and extraordinary perspective on health, disease, and medicine.
Why this process? Because good science, conducted with the most authentic criteria, is necessarily congruent with an integrated vision of mind and body, an integration that in our perspective is magnificently represented by the 5 Biological Laws. And even today's divergences can only converge. The review process of 5LB Magazine facilitates this convergence through an innovative reading of phenomena and scientific research.
CRITICALITY IN COMPARING PARADIGMS
In carrying out this review process, we will realize that, at times, it will be necessary to partially suspend the principles on which the 5LB are based, especially when the divergences are irreconcilable. For example, when the first-level review concerned news about the contagiousness of microbes, reference will have to be made to evidence that is currently interpreted in an irreconcilable way. Or when observational studies are dealt with in which psychological variables are completely neglected, having to hypothesize, absurdly, that people live in a bell jar, that they are not influenced by the life they lead and that the system is conditioned exclusively by the chemical and molecular agents under study.A certainly unrealistic circumstance. On the other hand, psychological variables are the great blind spot of current research, but to date this is the clinical methodology to which we cannot but adapt to allow a scientific comparison on real data. For these reasons, controlled and randomized studies will obviously be preferred, which can reduce the impact of hidden variables. As I have already explained, in this review activity, it will be noticed that, although some of the assumptions in the two theoretical models being compared are antithetical, often the data collected can be reread in a way that shows us, more than a contrast between the two models, a complementarity.
5LB MAGAZINE IN CONSTANT EVOLUTION
I started this journey in 2013 and my non-academic training has allowed me to be agile in research, especially because it has given me the permission to break the mold and try new paths. However, it is time to extend the project to broader skills: for this reason today (update 2015) I welcome the collaboration of biologists, doctors, researchers, and operators in the field who want to deepen these topics with their field experience. It is explicit that on this site you will not find medical prescriptions or therapeutic advice, because the 5 Biological Laws are not a therapy: any interpretation in this area is personal responsibility, and every therapeutic choice must be addressed together with your doctor. It is also necessary to take into account an intrinsic bias (prejudice) of our review process: the tendency to highlight more strongly the contradictions of overdiagnosis and over-treatment, because the 5LB model is by nature conservative.
Try changing your glasses now: in this section you will find all the news already reviewed.
